Nasihat al-muluk: From al-Ghazali to Sa’di

Nasihatnama, is one of the oldest genres in world literature and is among the most important sources of political education. In Islamic tradition, the Nasihatnama tradition started to flourish ever since the Abbasids started to translate and revive older texts from Sanskrit, Assyrian, Pahlavi, and Greek literary traditions.

The workshop instructor is Arash Khorashadi and during the four weeks of online sessions participants will be familiarized with the development of political thoughts from the late Seljuk period to the beginning of the Ilkhanid era by reading through al-Ghazali’s Nasihat al-muluk and Nasihat al-muluk of Sa’di of Shiraz.

The workshop will run for four weeks, starting from 13 October, 2020 until 3 November. 2020 and will be put forth as two-hour online meetings via Zoom. The online meetings are scheduled to be on Tuesdays, from 18.00-20.00 and the language of instruction is Farsi. The readings of the course will be in Farsi; however the participants will be able to communicate in both English and Turkish. The applications will be accepted from 8-11 October, 2020. The application results will be communicated via email on 12 October, 2020.
